Did you know that all orthodontists are dentists but only five
percent of dentists are orthodontists? Orthodontics is one of the nine specialized
branches of dentistry dealing with "malocclusions," or bad bite. Orthodontics
is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of dentistry. They examine
and diagnose teeth alignment issues and develop treatments to solve them using
an assortment of non-surgical methods to align the teeth and jaws; improving
the patient's health and appearance. They use corrective appliances, including
braces and retainers, to straighten crooked teeth and/or repair an irregular
bite. Since the debut of the new, clear braces, orthodontic treatment has gone
from something mainly for children and teenagers to a possibility for adults to
take care of their dental issues with more discretion. This in turn helps boost
self-confidence which can lead to positive changes. There are numerous
reasons for orthodontists to treat a patient, including crowded teeth, which
are a problem to clean; and misaligned bites such as an overbite, which make
chewing food tougher and can create appearance issues. Teeth-straightening
and extraction procedures done to improve alignment of remaining teeth has been
practiced for quite a long time. Today, about one in every 50 people is being
treated by an orthodontist and 25 percent of those people are adults. Many orthodontists
work in private practices and hospitals; however some dental offices have an
orthodontist on staff for their patient’s convenience just like our Apache Junction orthodontist.
